As a gateway to the world, Yokohama Port has been playing a very important role in promoting the modernization and internationalization of Japan, since it was opened to foreign trade in 1859.
Today, Yokohama Port acts a significant role in contributing to the international cargo distribution as one of the leading ports not only in Japan, but also in the world.

The Yokohama Port Public Corporation (YPPC) is a public service corporation established in December 1981 to manage and service the port’s overseas container terminals.

YPPC has constructed, leased and managed the port's terminals dedicated to foreign-trade cargos to provide Yokohama Port with more efficient functions adaptable to the recent trends such as the technological innovation in cargo distribution and the increasing quantity of handled cargos. YPPC is also in charge of the other business activities and helps the city of Yokohama as the port managing body to provide port services.

The Corporation currently manages and services ten container terminals, two multi-purpose terminals and eight conventional terminals, and based upon the past experience and know-how obtained from management of container terminals, the Corporation has been managing public container terminals since April 2007. Aiming to manage the efficient and convenient container terminals, the Corporation plays a unified role in all container terminals of Yokohama Port.
With these facilities being used exclusively by large numbers of shipping companies and port transportation companies, Yokohama Port handled 3.48 million TEU in 2008, which was the highest ever.
The global financial and economic crisis after the autumn of 2008 is said to be the worst in a century. While the situation surrounding Yokohama Port is severe, we work together that the port is becoming more user-friendly and popular among the citizens marking the 150th anniversary of the opening of Yokohama Port.
